Dust particles are generated and can become airborne during many activities associated with producing and processing rock and mineral products. Overexposure to mineral and metal dusts can have serious consequences for human health.

Rock dusts, including coal dust and silicon dust, can cause long-term lung problems including silicosis, asbestosis, and pneumoconiosis.

Exposure to aluminum-containing minerals such as bauxite and iron ores is often accompanied by silica, which may lead to the development of lung fibrosis and interstitial lung disease. Overexposure to copper dust during copper smelting operations may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and have the potential to damage the human liver.

Multiple independent studies have also found that occupational exposure to mineral dust is strongly associated with rheumatologic disease risk.
